The Little Match Girl - Hans Christian Andersen
Once there was a little girl who used to make a living by selling matches. It was New Year’s Eve and people all around her were having fun and celebrating.
Lights were shining from every window and there was the savory smell of roast goose.
Cold and sad, she sank down and huddled in a corner. She dared not go home because her father would certainly beat her for not selling any matches.
She drew a match from the bundle and struck it against the wall. It gave off a warm, bright light, like a small candle. It felt to the little girl as though she was sitting in front of a large iron stove.
She struck another match against the wall. Now, she could see a table that was covered by a snowy white table cloth with a splendid dinner service and a steaming roast goose.
She lit another match, and found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas tree. There were thousands of candles burning in the green branches and hanging colored pictures.
She again struck a match against the wall and, in the brightness, stood her old grandmother.
Her grandmother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms and they both flew upwards towards the heavens.
In the dawn of the following morning, the poor little girl was still huddled in the corner. She had pale white cheeks and her face was smiling. She was still clutching the matches in her hand and been frozen on that last evening of the year.
No one can imagine the beautiful things that she saw, or into what glory she entered with her grandmother on that New Year's Day.
